Specialist Valve Package for the Birmingham Resilience Project

Birmingham city skyline, UK.

The Birmingham Resilience Project was one of Severn Trent Water’s largest infrastructure projects to date, and T-T Flow was chosen as the provider of specialist valves for the £300 million scheme.

The project was introduced to establish an alternative water supply for Birmingham, a city which has relied on a single source of drinking water for over 100 years
Since 1904 Birmingham has been fed by water that has travelled 72 miles from Wales through the Elan Valley Aqueduct (EVA). Though this source has been reliable, ensuring its resilience requires both planned and unplanned maintenance to guarantee continuous operation.

During these repair and service phases a vital backup supply is necessary in order to keep clean water flowing to the 1.14 million city residents.

A new 26km pipeline and pumping station will provide an alternative potable water supply for up to 50 days every two years, allowing Severn Trent to fully shut down the EVA to complete essential maintenance on the aqueduct.

As part of the substantial project, T-T Flow – our dedicated valve division – supplied a range of different valve models.

Metal seat gate valves, satisfying BS5163 requirements and rated to 40 bar, were selected for their superior reliability and sealing performance – necessary to ensure a full shut off of the main water supply during maintenance works. The isolation valves are constructed from lightweight and strong ductile iron, featuring a corrosion-resistant fusion-bonded epoxy coating and welded gunmetal seats for maximum operational longevity and leak-free sealing.

The metal seat gate valves were fitted with custom clockwise closing stainless-steel non-rising stems, flanged to PN40 and fitted with reduction spur gearboxes ready for actuation.

Our experts also supplied multiple hydraulically operated automatic pressure reducing control valves with a maximum rating of 40 bar. These control valves feature the same robust ductile iron body and epoxy coating for reliability, with the addition of corrosion-resistant stainless-steel internals and a reinforced diaphragm for consistently accurate pressure regulation.

These valves will play a crucial role in the control, isolation and pressure management of flow through the pipeline in accordance with ongoing maintenance works and water supply needs.

Commercial Director Peter Hindley commented:

“It’s exciting to be a part of a project that will provide a new source of water for Birmingham and manage its increasing demand. This is a huge investment in the city and I am glad that T-T Flow could be a part of it. The team worked hard to ensure that all of the client's requirements were met and the project was delivered on time”
