Urgent Isolation Valves for Airport Flood Management

Problem

In January 2020, heavy rainfall overwhelmed Dubai International Airport's stormwater management system. The flooding resulted in submerged runways, taxiways and aprons, causing hundreds of flights to be delayed, canceled or diverted.

Dubai is the largest and busiest for international flying and the third-largest airport in the world. It's the sixth largest airport in the world for cargo flights and serves up to 90 million passengers each year. It's no surprise that disruptions from flooding have a major impact on the airport and need to be minimised as much as possible. Engineers have been working in Dubai to upgrade the airport's stormwater management system to reduce the chances of future disruption during heavy rainfall events.

Solution

To improve flood management, TT Flow (a division of TT Pumps) supplied several custom high-performance valves that were suitable for the demanding environment.

The supply included DN600 & DN700 metal seat wedge gate valves with weld overlay seats, controllable hydraulically damped DN600 & DN700 tilting disc check valves, DN1000 double-eccentric butterfly valves and DN350 swing check valves with weld overlay seats. The project also required several non-standard bespoke-manufactured DN750 double-flanged centric butterfly valves with vulcanised EPDM seat, stainless steel disc and worm gearbox.

Our Wedge Gate Valves are popular valves widely used for flow isolation duties and are available in two general configurations for clean water and wastewater applications.

Meanwhile, the supplied Check Valves have a hydraulically damped lever allowing for a ‘controlled’ closure of the disc assisting to avoid slam and water hammer conditions. Double Eccentric Butterfly Valves belong to a family of flow-isolating valves suited to clean water distribution networks, offering simple construction, a compact footprint and double eccentricity-reducing operating torques.

Improving flood management with specialist valves reduces the chance of future operational disruptions caused by adverse weather conditions. TT Pumps are proud to support partners in the UAE. Our association with high-profile projects like this further demonstrates our ability to manufacture and supply custom valves that exceed rigorous specifications.
