Adoptable Pumping Station Refurbishment for Welsh Water

Adoptable pumping station control panel in GRP kiosk.

T-T Pumping Stations – with experience supplying adoptable pumping stations to all Water Authorities across England, Scotland and Wales – were chosen by a housing developer to refurbish an existing pumping station that would serve their new 12-property site.

Our engineers began by completing a site survey to assess the state of the existing pumping station and provide recommendations to the developer based on Welsh Water's Sewers for Adoption 7th Edition addendum.

Following their assessment, the team proposed that the existing GRP wet well and valve chamber be re-used as they would provide adequate emergency storage for the site.

For waste transferal, two fully submersible single-stage pumps, featuring a cast-iron vortex impeller and stainless-steel pump shaft, were selected. The 1.5kW pumps were chosen for their strong construction materials, excellent solids handling capability up to 100mm and ATEX approval as this will ensure reliable and effective pumping of household waste.

Liquid-level sensors for pump automation were chosen from our FLO Range of float switches. ATEX-approved FLO101 models are robust and cost-effective, making them the perfect level control solution for the adoptable pumping station.

In keeping with Welsh Water’s adoption requirements, T-T Controls manufactured a specification-compliant control panel housed in a secure weatherproof double-door GRP kiosk. The station’s existing plinth was extended to fit the new kiosk, which was fitted with heating and vents to regulate panel temperature throughout the year, with an internal light for operative visibility. A GSM telemetry unit was fitted to the control system as required by Welsh Water for efficient status monitoring.

The team recommended a change to the station’s existing valve arrangement in order to increase hydraulic efficiency and guarantee protection against reverse flow. The new arrangement included two ductile iron gate valves complete with extension spindles and two ductile iron check valves with weights and guards from T-T Flow’s wide range of waterworks valves.

Finally, as requested by Welsh Water, a drainage pump with 4 metres of flexible hose was supplied and stored within the control panel kiosk for emptying the valve chamber as and when required.
