The Problem

Rising sea levels are threatening the low-lying archipelago, and the rugged pump is needed for reliable dredging and transferal of heavily laden sandy sediment from the ocean floor as part of the country’s land reclamation scheme.

In the Maldives large-scale land reclamation projects have been taking place since the 1990s. This involves dredging sand and coral debris from the ocean floor to expand their territory.

As one of the lowest-lying countries in the world – made up of over 1100 coral islands of which 80% are less than a metre above sea level – the South Asian archipelago is at great risk of disappearing with rising sea levels.

Both a popular tourist destination and home to one of the most densely populated capital cities on record, the Maldives is growing their coastlines in order to survive.

With a number of new land reclamation projects being announced for islands throughout the country, T-T Pumps was chosen to supply essential submersible pumps that can effectively transfer natural sand buildup from one island coastline to build sand levels on another.

The Solution

Our pumping experts specified a KTA submersible slurry pump from our popular Kino Titan Range of contractors pumps.

The KTA is designed for pumping heavy slurries and solids-laden liquid, packed with features that make it ideal for transferring sandy water from the ocean floor.

A high chrome impeller provides enhanced wear and corrosion resistance for reliability in the abrasive pumping environment, while a built-in agitator continuously mixes the incoming media to prevent sedimentation, both reducing the risk of blockages and ensuring consistent pumping performance.

The KTA has a maximum submersion depth of 25m, a double mechanical seal for critical protection and a cast iron body, making it tough enough to perform in the harsh conditions presented by these land reclamation schemes
